Pearls can last for generations if they’re looked after properly. They are softer than most gemstones and can be easily damaged without the right care. This guide covers how to wear, clean, store and restring your pearls to keep them looking their best.
WEARING PEARLS
Pearls are absorbent and need moisture to maintain their colour and lustre. Wearing them helps, as they absorb natural oils from the skin. Without this, they can become dull and discoloured.
They are also sensitive to everyday chemicals, including:
Perfume and hairspray – which can damage the pearl surface
Cleaning products – always remove pearls before using
Make-up and body lotions – apply these first, wait a couple of minutes and then put on your pearls.
Finally, take care with pearl rings. Although securely set, a knock or wearing gloves can loosen or damage the setting.
CLEANING & STORING PEARLS
A mild soapy water solution is a safe way to clean pearls, while specialist cleaning kits are also available. We recommend that customers choose what suits them best, often depending on the value of their pearls. Store pearls in a soft cloth, such as a Tenerife Pearla pouch, to prevent scratches. Avoid traditional jewellery boxes with hard edges, which can cause damage.
RE-STRINGING PEARLS
All our pearl strings are individually hand-knotted using two strands of silk thread. This prevents rubbing and ensures that only one pearl would be lost if the strand breaks. Over time, the silk can stretch or discolour depending on wear.
Pearls can be easily restrung when needed. We offer a quick restringing service – simply email us to arrange this.
